What is Community Economic Development?

According to the Canadian CED Network, CED is the name given to “action by people locally to create economic opportunities that improve social conditions, particularly for those who are most disadvantaged. CED is an approach that recognizes that economic, environmental and social challenges are interdependent, complex and ever-changing.” As such “to be effective, solutions [to these problems] must be rooted in local knowledge and led by community members. CED promotes holistic approaches, addressing individual, community and regional levels, recognizing that these levels are interconnected.”

In short, Community Economic Development is an approach to building up local communities that focuses on finding local solutions to local problems. CED recognizes that building up the businesses, organizations and individuals inside a community is the key to helping that community thrive, and as such CED training focuses on how best to go about doing just that.

Is This Training for You?

Are you interested in becoming a certified Economic Development Officer? Do you work in local government? Are you involved with local not-for-profits, charities or businesses or are you just interested in developing the skills necessary to build your community, working to promote economic stability, diversification, and sustainability? If any of this describes you, there will be something of value to learn in these modules.

The Community Edge CED program, is made up of eight half day modules, together covering the basics of how CED is best done in Manitoba. This training day is comprised of two of these modules, with the possibility of bringing the others six to town if there is demand. Modules Offered

Introduction to Community Economic Development

The first module of the day explains what CED is, identifies organizational structures, who is involved, and prepares your community’s readiness towards embarking on CED.

Marketing the Community

The second module of the day focuses on learning about developing a community brand and creating a marketing plan, and how to effectively market a community by using media tools, events, and publicity to execute that the plan.

Hope to see you there!
